  2. Ken Burns Jazz: The Story of American Music   $34.99
      Various Artists

Product details:   Various Artists.
User opinion for Ken Burns Jazz: The Story of American Music: "The problems faced by someone looking to summarise THE 20th century music art form are legion. Should it be an overview for the uninitiated? A sampler to draw people into further exploration? Should it try to satisfy afficionados? You can't do all that in just 5 discs and I don't think these were Ken Burns objectives. What he has tried to do I think is give a history of the music and in that he's succeeded wonderfully well. The box set gives a real and profound feel for how the music has developed through the last 100 years. To my mind, carping about which individual artists should and should not have been included is as irrelevant as it is inevitable as long as we the music's development is properly represented (although my one complaint would be that I think he has underplayed the importance of the piano trio). I don't feel the set exactly undervalues the last twenty years - it's simply that, in historical terms, what those years represent for the whole of the artform is as yet unclear.   3. 69 Love Songs   $29.76
      Magnetic Fields

Product details:   Magnetic Fields.
User opinion for 69 Love Songs: "Well, yes, there is some filler. But for 3 CDs and 69 songs, Stephen Merritt is allowed some slack. The rest is gorgeous, nearly a dictionary definition of indie pop. Most of the instrumentation is sparse, allowing the witty lyrics to come to the foreground. Many different styles appear here, with only the loose theme of "love" to tie them together. A lot of the songs deal with the messy end of love - making this set perfect for the heartbroken as well as the head-over-heels couples."
